Samsung Odyssey G8 debuts as the first 6K gaming monitor: DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 meets dual-mode 330 Hz
Samsung has begun selling the Odyssey G8 (G80HS), positioning it as the first gaming monitor on the market with a 6K panel.
The 32-inch display targets high-end PC players who want sharper detail without moving to a much larger screen size.
The monitor uses a Fast IPS panel with a native 6 144 x 3 456 resolution and a default 165 Hz refresh rate. Samsung also includes a Dual Mode setting that drops output to 3 072 x 1 728 to push the refresh rate up to 330 Hz.
Why DisplayPort 2.1 matters here?
A key feature is DisplayPort 2.1 with UHBR20 support, designed to handle higher bandwidth than earlier DisplayPort standards.
In practical terms, that can make it easier to run very high resolutions at high refresh rates with fewer compromises, depending on the GPU and settings.
Samsung pairs the DisplayPort connection with HDMI 2.1, aiming to cover modern graphics cards and other sources. The monitor also supports variable refresh rate via AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility.
Connectivity and performance trade-offs
Unlike some premium monitors that rely on USB-C for single-cable laptop setups, the Odyssey G8 (G80HS) skips USB-C entirely. Instead, it offers a small USB hub with two USB 3.2 Type-A ports.
Samsung rates the display at 1 ms GtG response time, though IPS panels typically trail OLED alternatives in perceived motion clarity. Peak brightness is listed at up to 350 nits, with HDR10 and HDR10+ support but no stated jump in brightness when HDR is enabled.
In the Eurozone, Samsung lists the Odyssey G8 (G80HS) at €1 499 and has indicated pre-orders should begin shipping around June 19. The launch underscores that, even as OLED spreads across gaming displays, Samsung still sees room for flagship IPS models where resolution and bandwidth are the main selling points.
