Magic: The Gathering Arena developers push to unionize at Wizards of the Coast, citing layoffs and AI concerns
More than 100 developers working on Magic: The Gathering Arena have announced an effort to unionize at Wizards of the Coast, pointing to job security, remote-work protections and limits on generative AI as central demands.
The group is seeking to join the Communications Workers of America, a union that has been expanding its footprint across the US games industry.
The campaign comes after years of turbulence at parent company Hasbro, which carried out sweeping job cuts in 2023 that affected Wizards teams alongside other divisions. Wizards has also faced fresh uncertainty in 2025, including layoffs tied to its digital projects, keeping workforce stability in sharp focus for employees.
Why AI is part of talks?
Organizers say they want clear guardrails around the use of generative AI in art and game development, arguing it can erode creative quality and devalue specialist roles.
The petition also calls for sustainable workloads and greater transparency over how new technology is introduced into production pipelines.
Wizards of the Coast has previously faced criticism and questions from players after instances where AI-generated imagery appeared in marketing materials, prompting the company to address how it sources and reviews creative assets.
That backdrop has made AI protections a defining feature of the Arena team’s union push, not a side issue.
What happens next for Wizards?
The group has asked Wizards of the Coast for voluntary recognition, a step that can avoid a longer election process if the company agrees. If recognition is not granted, organizers have indicated they are prepared to take the effort to the US National Labor Relations Board.
The union drive lands as Wizards continues to expand its biggest franchises, with Magic and Dungeons & Dragons planning major releases and crossovers in 2026. For workers, the question is whether that growth will be paired with protections they say are needed to keep teams intact and creative work human-led.
