BMW unveils long-wheelbase i3 and iX3 for China: the export-ready EVs with more than just extra legroom

BMW has unveiled long-wheelbase versions of its i3 sedan and iX3 SUV tailored for China, aiming to compete more directly with fast-moving local EV rivals.

The updates go beyond added length, focusing on rear-seat comfort, usability and market-specific design choices.

One of the most notable changes is a switch away from motorized pop-out door handles to mechanical flush units with a recessed pull.

The move aligns with tightening scrutiny in China around electronically actuated flush handles, while also simplifying a feature some drivers consider overcomplicated.

More space, different cabin approach

The i3 L stretches its wheelbase to just over 3 m, up from about 2.9 m in the standard model, primarily to create a roomier back seat. BMW is positioning the longer car as a more chauffeured-friendly option, a key selling point in China’s premium segment.

BMW also added China-specific details, including an illuminated M badge on the C-pillar on M Sport-equipped cars. The company has increasingly localized design and ambient lighting elements to match preferences in the region.

iX3 L focuses on rear comfort

The iX3 long-wheelbase variant mirrors the exterior stretch but leans harder into cabin upgrades. BMW says it adds physical seat controls, more rear-seat padding and increased recline, along with new two-tone interior themes not offered on the standard iX3.

BMW is also highlighting driving-range figures under China’s CLTC test cycle, which typically produces higher numbers than WLTP or EPA ratings. That matters in marketing, but buyers comparing models across regions should note that test standards are not directly equivalent.

China-built EVs headed abroad

In a shift from many earlier China-only long-wheelbase programs, BMW plans to export these locally built EVs to other Asian markets.

The company has confirmed the iX3 L for India, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, with additional markets possible.

BMW has not indicated plans to sell the China-built long-wheelbase i3 or iX3 in Europe or the United States, where it is preparing separate next-generation EV production. The strategy underscores how regional regulations, buyer tastes and supply chains are increasingly shaping distinct versions of the same nameplate.
