Microsoft has quietly updated Windows 11 power and sleep behavior, tightening default screen-off and sleep timers and refining how Modern Standby works to reduce unnecessary wake-ups.

The changes are documented in updated Microsoft guidance and apply to systems running Windows 11 24H2, with the same behavior expected to carry into 25H2.

Modern Standby, also known as S0 low-power idle, is designed to deliver fast wake and limited background activity similar to phones and tablets. In practice, that always-connected model has drawn complaints on some PCs for battery drain and unwanted activity while a laptop appears to be asleep.

Shorter default sleep timers

Microsoft’s revised defaults shorten how long a PC stays idle before dimming the display and entering sleep, particularly on Modern Standby-capable devices.

On battery, the screen now turns off after 3 minutes and the device sleeps after 3 minutes, while plugged in the defaults shift to 5 minutes for both.

Systems that still use legacy S3 sleep also see reduced timers, though they remain less aggressive than Modern Standby defaults. Microsoft’s updated settings move screen-off to 3 minutes on battery and 5 minutes when plugged in, with sleep shifting to 10 minutes on battery and 15 minutes on AC power.

Modern Standby wake behavior tightened

Beyond the timers, Microsoft has added safeguards intended to limit power loss during sleep. If Windows detects excessive battery drain during Modern Standby, it can automatically disable most wake sources so the PC wakes only through deliberate actions such as pressing the power button or opening the lid.

Microsoft also adjusted input and display rules to reduce accidental wakes in certain closed-lid scenarios, and it notes that voice wake is no longer supported as a wake source from sleep. Together, the tweaks are meant to reduce background wake events that can keep a laptop warmer and drain the battery in a bag.

What this means for Windows 11 users?

For many users, the updates may translate into fewer surprise battery drops and less unexplained activity during sleep, particularly on thin-and-light laptops built around Modern Standby.

Others may notice their screens turning off sooner, which can be changed in Settings if the new defaults feel too aggressive.

Microsoft continues to provide tools such as SleepStudy to help diagnose what happens during standby sessions and identify drivers or devices that trigger wakes.

The company’s updated documentation signals an ongoing effort to make Modern Standby behavior more predictable across Windows 11 hardware.
