Windows 11 Preview Build overhauls Windows Update controls and reshapes Insider channels
Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 preview builds introduce a notable rethink of how the Windows Insider Program is organized, while also adding new controls aimed at making Windows Update less disruptive.
The changes are rolling out first to Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels.
The Dev Channel build 26300.8289 begins a phased move of some participants into a newly positioned Experimental channel, part of a broader channel restructure. Microsoft says the transition will appear gradually, with an option to enable the new experience through Windows Insider settings.
More control during Windows Update
On the Windows Update side, Microsoft is testing features intended to improve security and user choice without forcing immediate restarts.
Among the additions is the ability to skip updates during the initial setup experience, giving users more flexibility on first boot.
Insiders can also extend update pauses repeatedly, rather than hitting a fixed limit after a set number of days. Microsoft is additionally surfacing clearer information about available updates to help users decide what to install and when.
Small fixes with practical impact
The builds include a Start menu tweak that improves detection of clicks at the far left edge of the taskbar when icons are left-aligned. Microsoft also addressed an error some testers saw when opening the Group Policy Editor in recent flights.
Separately, Microsoft updated Times New Roman to better handle combining diacritical marks across Greek and Cyrillic Unicode ranges.
Printer-related changes also continue, with the Internet Protocol Print driver receiving new hardware IDs ahead of upcoming adjustments to driver ranking and deprecation plans.
In the Beta Channel, build 26220.8283 carries several of the same fixes, including the Start menu improvement and the Group Policy correction. Microsoft is tracking known issues, including a Feature flags display bug that can incorrectly show feature state even when changes apply correctly.
