Smart #2 Concept Signals a Return to the Two-Door City EV, With Faster Charging and V2L
Smart has revealed the Concept #2, a new two-door, two-seat electric city car positioned as a modern successor to the original Fortwo. The show car revives the brand’s smallest format at a time when most new EV launches skew larger and heavier.
The company says a production version is slated to follow later this year, with a debut planned for October at the Paris Motor Show.
While the final design is expected to be toned down from the concept, Smart indicates the compact footprint and urban focus will remain central.
A small EV with bigger ambitions
Unlike earlier Fortwo models that were offered with combustion engines and later as the EQ Fortwo, the new #2 is set to be fully electric only. Smart is targeting a manufacturer-estimated range of about 300 km, a substantial jump over the short-range EQ Fortwo that previously struggled to compete beyond city duty.
Charging is also a key part of the pitch, with Smart claiming a 10% to 80% fast-charge in under 20 minutes. The brand has not yet disclosed battery capacity or peak charging power, details that will likely determine how widely the car can deliver on that promise.
V2L joins the city-car toolkit
Smart says the #2 will include vehicle-to-load capability, allowing the battery to power external devices such as small appliances and electronics. V2L has become an increasingly common feature on newer EV platforms, but it is still rare in the smallest city-car segment.
Interior images have not been released, though the production car is expected to adopt a simplified digital layout similar in direction to Smart’s newer models, including a driver display and a central touchscreen. The concept signals a tech-forward cabin without abandoning the small-car mission that made Smart a recognizable urban brand.
Made in China, aimed at Europe
Smart is operated as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, and current-generation Smart vehicles are manufactured in China. The company says the #2 will use the Electric Compact Architecture, underscoring the platform-led approach behind its expanding EV lineup.
Final dimensions have not been confirmed, but the car is expected to land close to the Fortwo’s roughly 2.7 m length, which would make it among the smallest new EVs sold in Europe. More specifications, pricing, and market availability are expected around the Paris reveal as city-focused EV competition intensifies.
