Survey suggests Garmin fans still prefer MiP displays over AMOLED, and battery life may be why
Garmin’s growing shift toward AMOLED screens is meeting resistance from a vocal part of its user base, according to a recent community poll. The survey indicates many buyers still prioritize the practical strengths of MiP, or Memory-in-Pixel, displays.
The poll, posted in the r/GarminWatches subreddit, drew 1 086 responses focused on what people would do if Garmin phased out MiP models. More respondents said they would buy an older MiP watch or switch brands than move to an AMOLED alternative.
Why MiP still wins outdoors?
MiP screens are valued for readability in bright sunlight, where reflective display tech can remain clear without pushing extreme brightness. AMOLED panels can get very bright, but their dimmer always-on modes can be harder to see outdoors.
Battery life is the other major factor, especially for endurance athletes and hikers who rely on multi-day tracking. Garmin’s own product positioning has long tied MiP models, often paired with solar charging options, to extended runtimes.
Garmin lineup changes fuel debate
Recent product cycles have increased the sense that MiP options are shrinking, with more lines leaning heavily toward AMOLED. Enthusiasts point to earlier generations that offered MiP choices as evidence that the company could maintain both paths.
The survey is not a scientific sample and reflects a self-selected community, but it highlights a clear preference among engaged Garmin users. As Garmin refreshes its premium sports watches, the company’s display strategy could become a bigger factor in upgrade decisions.
