BYD Sealion 05 targets mainstream buyers with five-minute charging and a 2 105 km hybrid range claim
BYD has launched the 2026 Sealion 05 series, expanding its Ocean lineup with two distinct choices: a battery-electric Sealion 05 EV and the Sealion 05 DM-i plug-in hybrid.
The move underscores BYD’s strategy of pushing new tech into lower price bands while widening its reach in the SUV market.
The headline feature is speed and endurance, depending on the version you choose. BYD is pairing fast-charging claims on the EV with long-distance figures on the DM-i to ease two of the biggest consumer concerns: charging time and driving range.
Five-minute charging, 630 km EV range
For the Sealion 05 EV, BYD highlights its flash charging capability, saying the vehicle can replenish enough energy in about five minutes under suitable conditions.
The model also uses BYD’s Blade Battery design, which the company has long positioned around safety and durability.
BYD lists an EV driving range of up to 630 km on China’s CLTC test cycle, along with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. Real-world range typically varies by speed, temperature, terrain and driving style, but the figures place the Sealion 05 among the more competitive value-focused electric SUVs in its class.
DM-i version leans on long trips
The Sealion 05 DM-i plug-in hybrid uses BYD’s latest DM technology and is aimed at drivers who want electric commuting without relying solely on charging infrastructure. BYD says the hybrid can run at a fuel consumption rate as low as 3.1 L per 100 km once the battery is depleted.
The company’s biggest number is a total combined range of up to 2 105 km with a full tank and full battery, again based on CLTC-style testing.
Buyers can choose between two battery options, with BYD citing up to 220 km or up to 305 km of electric-only range depending on the pack.
Driver assistance is another selling point, with higher trims offering BYD’s God’s Eye C system and an optional LiDAR-equipped upgrade associated with the more advanced God’s Eye B. Inside, BYD emphasizes its ocean aesthetics cabin design and a 2 770 mm wheelbase intended to support rear-seat space.
Pricing is positioned to be disruptive in China, where BYD says the Sealion 05 DM-i starts at RMB 97 900, while the EV starts at RMB 119 900. The combination of low entry pricing and attention-grabbing charging and range claims is likely to intensify pressure on rival brands competing for cost-sensitive SUV buyers.
