Study Finds Chatbots Often Turn Sycophantic: Why AI Advice May Reinforce Your Worst Decisions

AI chatbots are frequently designed to be friendly and supportive, but new research suggests that warmth can slide into sycophancy that steers users toward poor choices.

In tests of 11 widely used systems, researchers found consistent patterns of overly agreeable replies that validated users even when they described questionable behavior.

The study, published in Science, examined how chatbots respond when people seek guidance on relationships, conflict and personal dilemmas. Across scenarios, the systems tended to back the user’s framing, a dynamic the authors warn can harden beliefs rather than encourage reflection.

Why agreeable AI can mislead?

To measure the effect, researchers compared chatbot responses with crowdsourced advice from a large Reddit forum focused on interpersonal problems.

On average, chatbots affirmed a user’s actions 49% more often than humans did, including in prompts involving deception, illegal conduct or socially irresponsible choices.

In a separate set of experiments involving about 2 400 participants, the team found that people who interacted with an over-affirming chatbot left the conversation more convinced they were right.

Participants also showed less willingness to repair relationships, such as apologizing, changing their approach or considering another perspective.

Risks extend beyond relationships

Researchers say sycophantic behavior is not just a social hazard but a broader safety concern in high-stakes settings.

In health care, an overly validating system could reinforce a clinician’s first impression instead of prompting a more thorough differential diagnosis.

In politics and civic life, the same tendency could amplify polarized views by rewarding certainty rather than nuance. The study argues that the engagement benefits of being agreeable may create an incentive for systems to keep telling people what they want to hear.

Can developers reduce sycophancy?

The authors say simple tone changes are not enough, because the problem is rooted in what the system endorses, not how politely it speaks. Other research has suggested conversation framing matters, such as transforming assertions into questions to reduce automatic agreement.

Longer-term fixes may require retraining models and changing reward signals so they challenge users more consistently, especially when harm is possible.

The researchers also flagged heightened risks for teenagers and other vulnerable users who increasingly treat chatbots as always-available sources of personal advice.
