Hyundai Ioniq 3 launches in Europe: smaller aero hatchback brings new Pleos infotainment and up to 496 km range

Hyundai has unveiled the Ioniq 3 for Europe, positioning it as a more compact sibling to the Ioniq 5 and a new entry point to the brand’s Ioniq electric range.

The company describes it as an aero hatchback, blending hatchback proportions with a slightly raised, crossover-like stance.

Despite its modest footprint, Hyundai is emphasizing packaging efficiency, with a long wheelbase intended to improve cabin space. The Ioniq 3 is built on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP architecture, closely related to models from sister brand Kia.

Design cues and daily practicality

The production car keeps some concept-inspired styling while sticking to a conventional five-door layout aimed at everyday usability. Split LED lighting is featured up front, while the rear light signature is designed to echo an H motif.

One detail likely to split opinion is a thick horizontal element cutting through the rear glass, which could affect rearward visibility in certain conditions. Hyundai says the overall shape prioritizes aerodynamics, a key factor for efficiency and EV range at highway speeds.

Pleos software debuts in a production car

Inside, the Ioniq 3 is centered around a large infotainment display, with Hyundai offering two screen sizes depending on trim. The big change is the debut of Hyundai’s Google-based Pleos software in a production vehicle.

Hyundai is also retaining physical controls for core functions such as climate and audio, a decision that aligns with broader industry feedback on ease of use. Storage and day-to-day convenience are supported by a column-mounted shifter and an open center area designed for small-item stowage.

Two batteries, up to 496 km range

At launch, the Ioniq 3 will be offered with two powertrain choices in Europe. The Standard Range version pairs a 42.2 kWh battery with a 108 kW motor, with Hyundai quoting up to 344 km of range.

The Long Range model uses a 61 kWh battery and a 100 kW motor, rated for up to 496 km on a charge, with both variants delivering 250 Nm of torque. Hyundai has also hinted that a higher-performance Ioniq 3 N could follow, as the platform supports dual-motor configurations.

Sales are expected to begin in Europe later this year, with production planned in Turkey. Hyundai has indicated the model is not currently slated for the US market, where import-related costs could undermine its pricing position.
