BYD unveils 1 000 HP Formula SL sedan: a new Tesla Model S Plaid challenger from its off-road brand
BYD used the 2026 Beijing Auto Show to introduce the Formula SL, a high-performance electric luxury sedan under its Fang Cheng Bao brand.
The new model targets the same rarefied space as the Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan, with BYD highlighting outright power and advanced chassis tech.
The debut is notable because Fang Cheng Bao has been positioned primarily around rugged SUVs and off-roaders. Launching a low-slung performance sedan signals an expansion of that identity, as BYD broadens the sub-brand beyond adventure-focused vehicles.
Performance specs point to Plaid
BYD says the Formula SL uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and a tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing up to 1 000 hp.
That configuration places it in direct contention with the quickest EV sedans, where high-voltage systems are also used to support faster charging and sustained performance.
In size, the Formula SL appears aimed at the full-size premium segment, with a 3 101 mm wheelbase and overall length of 4 978 mm. Those dimensions put it close to flagship electric sedans, suggesting BYD wants the Formula SL to compete on comfort and cabin space as well as speed.
DiSus-M suspension takes center stage
The company also pointed to its DiSus-M magnetic suspension, a proprietary system typically reserved for higher-tier models.
BYD positions the tech as improving ride quality and stability, reflecting an emphasis on handling and safety alongside straight-line acceleration.
BYD framed the announcement as part of a broader Formula family that also includes the Formula X supercar, the Formula S sports car, and a Formula S GT shooting brake. The company has not provided pricing or a launch timeline, and availability is expected to begin in China before any potential expansion.
