AirPods Max 2 adds H2 chip and Live Translation: Apple bets its priciest headphones can do more than sound good
Apple has introduced AirPods Max 2, refreshing its high-end over-ear headphones with the H2 chip and a set of software features that bring the model closer to the AirPods Pro line. The update keeps the familiar design but aims to make the Max more useful for everyday communication and hands-free control.
The headline feature is Live Translation, which is designed to help translate in-person conversations in real time through the headphones. Apple is positioning the tool as part of a broader push to make AirPods feel more assistant-like, especially as the company prepares further Siri updates.
AirPods Max 2 also gains Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness, features that dynamically blend noise control with awareness of nearby speech. Apple says Active Noise Cancellation has been improved as well, focusing on stronger reduction of outside sound while maintaining audio fidelity.
New controls and lossless option
For Siri Interactions, users can respond to certain prompts with head gestures such as nodding or shaking their head. Apple has been adding more on-device interaction methods across its products, aiming to reduce the need to pull out an iPhone for quick responses.
For listening and production work, AirPods Max 2 supports 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio when connected via USB-C. That wired option is aimed at users who want higher-quality playback or monitoring than standard Bluetooth codecs typically allow.
Pricing, timing and new colors
Apple is listing AirPods Max 2 at $549 in the US and £499 in the UK, with pre-orders opening March 25 and availability expected in early April. The company is keeping the Max as its premium headphone tier, priced above AirPods Pro and most mainstream wireless rivals.
Color choices expand to midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue. While the hardware changes are incremental, the combination of the H2 chip and Live Translation signals Apple’s intent to make AirPods Max a smarter accessory, not just an audiophile one.
