YouTube tests AI-powered search with guided answers, a potential shift in how viewers discover videos

YouTube is testing an AI-powered interactive search feature designed to return guided answers alongside video results, aiming to make complex queries easier to complete without leaving the platform.

The tool, presented as an opt-in experiment for eligible users, blends text prompts with curated video clips and longer videos, pointing viewers to specific moments that match their question.

How Ask YouTube search works?

In examples shared by YouTube, a query such as planning a multi-day road trip produces step-by-step suggestions paired with relevant videos, including segments, titles and channel information to support discovery.

The experience also supports follow-up questions, which can refine results in the same guided format, closer to a conversational search flow than traditional keyword-based browsing.

Who can access the test?

The company says the feature is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the U.S. who are 18 or older, and it requires users to opt in through YouTube’s experimental features page.

YouTube has also indicated it is working toward making the capability available beyond Premium, suggesting the test is partly about measuring usefulness at broader scale.

The YouTube experiment fits into Google’s wider push to add AI-driven, multi-step assistance across products, following its broader rollout of conversational AI experiences in search.

If expanded, guided answers on YouTube could reshape how creators are surfaced for informational queries, and it may later open the door to new placements that resemble sponsored recommendations.
