Google has begun rolling out a new AI Enhance option in Google Photos, expanding the app’s built-in editing tools for Android users worldwide. The button appears in the Auto section alongside existing Enhance and Dynamic options.

The feature is designed for quick, one-tap improvements rather than dramatic changes. Early hands-on testing suggests it can recover highlights and shadows, reduce the impact of poor lighting, and slightly boost color without pushing images into an overprocessed look.

Subtle edits, not major overhauls

Compared with more aggressive AI photo editors, AI Enhance appears to aim for restrained adjustments that keep photos looking natural. That approach may appeal to users who want quick fixes without the risk of altering skin tones or adding heavy artifacts.

Google positions the results as variable, noting that output can differ by device. That wording points to device-dependent processing and performance, potentially tied to hardware capabilities and available resources.

Offline use still seems limited

Despite hints that some processing may happen on-device, AI Enhance may still require an internet connection in real-world use. Tests attempting to run the tool fully offline have indicated it can refuse to work without connectivity.

For now, AI Enhance appears to be available at no additional cost in its current form. The rollout continues Google Photos’ recent push to add faster, simpler editing features that can be applied in seconds.
